RYMS & Friends Disc Golf Tour 2004

Disc Golf!

What is Disc Golf?
It is like regular golf except you use a flying disc (also known as a Frisbee®). You throw the disc and try to use the least number of throws to get in the basket. Basically, though, it’s just a cool way to hang out with friends out in the sunshine.

Two options this summer: just come and give disc golf a try or join the RYMS Disc Golf League (see below).

What Do You Need?
If you’ve got a disc golf disc, that’s great! Bring it along! If not, we’ve got some RYMS discs that you can use. Dress for the sun, get ready to walk, maybe bring some water, and let’s go!

June/July Schedule
Below dates will be played at the Silver Creek Park course in Manitowoc. Silver Creek Park is located on S. 10th St. just south of the UW-Center. Meet near the soccer fields.
Wednesday, June 16, 2:30-3:45 PM
Wednesday, June 23, 2:30-3:45 PM

RYMS Disc Golf League
Do you have what it takes to be part of the RYMS Disc Golf League? In this league, we will keep track of your scores throughout the summer, and then declare the RYMS champion.

League Brackets
**All Par 3 from long tees
**All Par 3 from Short tees

If you like disc golf, but don’t want the pressures of being in a league, or can’t be there every week, you can still come and play!

For more info, or for make up score cards, contact the Disc Golf Tour Director, Matt, by emailing Pastor Squires.

Redeemer Lutheran youth try to live faith every day
By Charlie Mathews
Herald Times Reporter

MANITOWOC — Redeemer Lutheran teens enjoy combining discussion of faith issues with smelt fries, waterpark trips, Shantytown, and Wacky Wild Winter Olympics.

For the high school students at the north side church it’s part of living life in the EDGE — Every Day God Experience. This is the name of the group for ninth- through 12th graders after going through confirmation in eighth grade.

EDGE is part of RYMS — Redeemer Youth Ministries — that also includes the sixth- through eighth-graders.

“I think it’s great we can come here and I can talk about what I think, learn more about God, talk about how music and friends affect our lives and how they relate to God,” said Katie Rettinger, a Lincoln High School sophomore.

She was one of about 20 teens in the youth room last Sunday evening making final preparation for Tuesday’s Smelt Fry fund-raiser. But, first, Youth Pastor Ben Squires led a discussion around the theme, “Who’s tough to love?”

The talk was linked to a handout titled, “Will you be Jesus to me?” One of the discussion questions was, “Whom do you know well enough in your world to know that, in their own way, they want to be loved by God?”

Travis Boprey said some teens are tough to love. “If nobody talks to them, they’re fine with that. But if somebody is tough to love we want to get them back in the flow with everybody else, force them to show their feelings, help change their life around,” he said.

One aspect of her faith life Rettinger can share with peers is, “No matter what you do, God still loves you if you make a mistake.”

Jason Fricke believes compassion can be the key to Christian relationship building. “When we come to EDGE we learn about life issues, how God can be part of our decision making When we show compassion we bring people closer to God,” he said.

Kyle Andrastek enjoys group activities. “We rake leaves for shut-ins, volunteer to shovel snow, raise money for Habitat for Humanity through Shantytown, visit nursing homes,” he said. In fact, in April, 38 RYMS and friends slept outside in cardboard boxes and raised $2,956 for Habitat.

The next group event will be a RYMS & Friends Noah’s Ark Trip on June 25 with all community youth invited.

More than a dozen Redeemer youth will go in July to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod National Youth Gathering in Florida.

Squires uses a 21st Century method to communicate with the church teens, and everybody else, through an Internet Web Log — a “Blog” in tech lingo — at ryms.blogspot.com.

The total $4900 will be used to cover the costs this year of the Boundary Waters Canoe Trip, the Fall Retreat, the Noah's Ark trip, the 2004 National Youth Gathering, plus the Youth Board is considering other special projects and needs which might be covered with these additional funds.
